MSFS 2020 – 2024 The Differences:
View the Difference in the two Videos above
MSFS 2024 Payware Airports Just for Comparison
Checkout the Payware Airport as an example, specifically KDEN – KORD – KLAX and KJFK – EHAM. Just to name a few
If you rather have this excellent airports, then Standard version of MSFS 2020 is just fine – If you are going to purchase there airports, then Premium or Deluxe Version of MSFS 2024 would just be for the additional Aircraft. Check our Page for MSFS 2020 Explained for more details here.
MSFS 2024 Aircraft
There are so many choices within the different versions – You need to carefully sort out what Aircraft you need and like to fly. Bear in mind that on top of the Aircraft included within MSFS 2024, there are great options on Payware ones – PMDG will eventually extend their entire range B777 , B737 and any new ones into the new SIM. Inibuilds A350 is already available as MSFS 2024 and so is the Airbus range from Fenix. Check the developers site or FsElite for m more information.
2. MSFS 2024 Initial Installation
Prior to installation, it is recommended that two separate directories be created. The first one should be named “Xbox” (example) for the executable file, and the second one “MSFS” (example) for the content, on a different SSD with at least 500 GB capacity. The installation process consists of two steps. Initially, you should download the executable file and install it into the “Xbox” directory. Secondly, start MSFS 2024 and indicate where to place the content. Point to the drive where the “MSFS” folder is located. After the installation process is complete, there will be two folders within the “MSFS” directory. One folder is called Official, and the other is Community. This logical move will ensure that MSFS 2024 is kept away from your system folders, and all your main content will be in a large enough space and easily accessible. You can call the folders above any other names that you wish. The Download size of MSFS 2024 is considerably smaller then in MSFS 2020, since a large part of it is provided within the Cloud. Make sure you have a good Internet connection, otherwise the data volume to fill your Sim world will not be able to cope – that is the downside of MSFS 2024
Continue as below with World Updates
- Launch Microsoft Flight Simulator.
- On the main menu, head to the Marketplace.
- Select World.
- Then click on World Update (See all)
- Click on the Update(s) you want to install.
- Click on Get & Download
World Updates up to WU18 are already incorporated into the SIM. In MSFS 2024 we start with WU 19
World Update XIX: Brazil, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana l (WU19), World update for Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) Released 11 March, 2025
See Release Notes Here
3. Advanced Installation
When purchasing content from ORBX, it is crucial to understand that their products can be efficiently installed in an isolated directory. Upon configuring the ORBX Central APP, you can select a specific folder, such as “ORBX MSFS,” located outside of the MSFS Content folder. Any ORBX addons stored in this directory will be properly connected and identified within the Community folder. One significant benefit to this method is that in the event that you must reinstall the simulator, there will be no need to reinstall ORBX content since it is separate.

To ensure easy access to freeware downloads sourced from platforms like flghtsim.to, I recommend storing them in a designated folder named ‘MSFS Freeware’. You can simplify the process of linking these freeware to your MSFS Community folder by utilizing the ‘MSFS addons Linker’ tool, which can be downloaded from the following link: msfs-addons-linker. After installation, select your MSFS Community folder and apply the location where you have saved your freeware. The program will then promptly link all freeware to the Community Folder, making them easily accessible for you. The process is straightforward and is sure to facilitate ease of access to all your freeware downloads.
4. MSFS 2020 Graphic Simulator Settings
The MSFS 2024 internal Graphic Settings follow analogue to the MSFS 2020 settings and can be easily modified via the menu General Settings – Graphics. It is important to note that hardware specifications vary from PC to PC, and therefore, specific settings may not be universally applicable. To simplify the process, Microsoft/Asobo has provided a feature at the top of the Graphics Settings where users can specify their system specifications, ranging from Low to High end. It is highly recommended to start somewhere in the middle and gradually work upwards by increasing individual sliders. For an optimal experience, it is suggested to experiment with the settings while flying the FBW A20N at a high-density airport such as KJFK until desired results are obtained.
You may find the two Videos from Q8 Pilot extremely useful, which are posted on the right hand side.

5. Compatibility issues MSFS 2020 and 2024
At release of MSFS 2024 Microsoft / Asobo stated that most Addons, Aircraft or Airports should be backward compatible.
The reality however is different. At the time of publishing this page (24 April 2025) , Aircraft like the PMDG B737 and B777 were not. Likewise the MD11 from TFDI design., just to name a few. Inibuilds released the A350 in a 2020 and 2024 version with subtle differences (Cabin in 2020 not fully modelled). Fenix A320 series also is available for MSFS 2024 Most Airports however, that being free or pay ware have both versions now or will have shortly. Rather then publishing an almost identical list of MSFS 2020 Pay and freeware Addons, the links below will refer to to the MSFS 2020 Explained Page and the relevant subjects. It is recommended that you check the Developers page for compatibility to MSFS 2024. The Freeware stuff on flightsim.to for example will indicate of the product is 2024 compatible.
